Artist Ray Simon key note speaker for enlistment ceremony at the Youngstown Chevy Centre.

Soldiers of Valor: Through this painting the artist commemorates the soldiers serving our nation in the United States Army.

The first days vanquishing the British regime are remembered in the lower right-hand corner of the print as the American Revolutionary soldier marches into the battle of liberation behind the Old Glory, bearing its original 13 colonial stars and stripes.

The shadowy base of the painting recognizes the poignant and tragic struggle between friends and relatives as a result of the war between the states, the Civil War.

Awakening from the isolationism of a young nation, 20th Century America called upon the Doughboy, the G.I., and the Grunt. Their unwavering service is honored as the artist moves from vignette to vignette in a montage of soldiers who answered the call of duty. From Doughboys of WWI dismounting their caissons in France to set up a defensive machine gun position, to the 1st Division’s return to France (less than 20 years later) aboard Higgins LCVPs storming Omaha Beach in Normandy. A Willys MB Jeep and crew racing to their anti-aircraft position to cover the advance of our troops, to the last defenders of Pork Chop Hill on the 38th parallel of South Korea. At the top of the painting American soldiers arrive at a Vietnam landing zone in several Huey UH-1 helicopters behind the advance of Sheridan M-155 light tanks, to the 21st century US soldier (both man and woman) performing their duties in the war on terror, they all have rose to the challenge, liberators all.

In all its history (since the American Revolution to this very day) the United States Army has left home and gone to war to liberate the oppressed. America and the entire world will forever be in debt to the American Soldier, a debt that can never be repaid. In the foreground, a son removes his cap, looks up in honor at these soldiers as his father salutes them. The WWI Doughboy graciously returns the honor and respect. Freedom is borne and kept alive through the costly sacrifices that have been laid upon the altar of democracy made by these great Americans…the Soldiers of Valor.
